Trim Levels
For the 2022 year, the ST-Line trim rejoins the Explorer's lineup, bringing the total number of trims to eight: the XLT, ST-Line, Limited, Timberline, ST, King Ranch, and Platinum. If you're looking for an off-roading trim, the Timberline model has steel skid plates, a slightly raised suspension, and front tow hooks.
Engine
The 2022 Ford Explorer comes with two strong engine options. The base 2.3-liter turbocharged four-cylinder engine produces 300 horsepower and 310 pound-feet of torque. If you want something stronger, upgrade to the 3.0-liter twin-turbocharged V-6 that gets 400 horsepower and 415 pound-feet of torque. The first five trims come with this engine, while the rest feature the V-6 engine. Both engines are mated to a 10-speed automatic transmission. Rear-wheel drive is standard, but four-wheel drive is optional on all except the Timberline, on which it comes standard.
Performance
The 2022 Explorer achieves above-average gas mileage compared to other vehicles in its class. With the base engine and four-wheel drive, the SUV gets 21 mpg in the city and 28 mpg on the highway. Vehicles with rear-wheel drive and the base engine have their numbers dip slightly with 18 mpg in the city and 26 mpg on the highway.
Those with the V-6 engine and rear-wheel drive get 18 mpg in the city and 26 mpg on the highway, while those with four-wheel drive have the same city rating but 24 mpg on the highway. Also, when properly equipped, the 2022 Explorer has a maximum towing capacity of 5,600 pounds.
Performance
Up to seven people can travel comfortably in the 2022 Ford Explorer, but that number dips to six if the SUV has second-row captain's chairs. All three rows boast plenty of headroom and legroom. Not to be outdone when it comes to interior space, the vehicle's cargo area has ample room as well. It has 18.2 cubic feet of space behind the third row, 47.9 cubic feet behind the second row, and 87.8 cubic feet of space behind the first row.
The SUV's infotainment system comes standard with an 8-inch touch-screen display as well as Apple CarPlay and Android Auto connectivity. Other standard features include a Wi-Fi hot spot, satellite radio, and several USB ports.
Safety Features
Ford knows how paramount safety is, which is why it made more than a dozen safety features standard in the 2022 Explorer. These features include automatic high-beam headlights, forward automatic emergency braking, blind-spot monitoring, and forward-collision warning. To keep your little ones safe, the Explorer includes four complete sets of LATCH connectors located on the second and third-row outboard seats.
